Naturalization and Early Life in the US

After four years in the DP camp, Bert boarded the USAT Mercey on June 7, 1949. The ship was full of refugees from the Nazi Reich, mostly Jewish, and lasted twelve miserable days. Bert arrived in the United States on  June 19th, 1949, when the Mercey made port in New York, New York. He was met by cousins, Aunt and Uncles, and after an unexpected weeklong stay, eventually arrived in Atlanta, GA. The 22 hour train ride from NYC brought him to the Union Station in Atlanta, where he was greeted by Rabbi Tobias Geffen, who greeted him in Yiddish, and brought him back to his wife and his home. That day, June 27th, 1949, was the first day of the rest of his life.
